Welcome
Once you’ve been accepted into the Professional Science Master’s Program~ CONGRATULATIONS!
You will receive a welcome packet in the mail that will help orient you to OSU and prepare you for your first term. You’re welcome to visit current student and alumni profile websites to see where our students come from and what they’re doing now.
While many of our students do come into the PSM program right after completing their Bachelor’s degree, several are returning to continue their education after spending 10 to 20 years working in the field. You will belong to two cohorts while completing your degree: 1) PSM students taking the professional coursework as a group, and 2) graduate students within your specific discipline. It’s the broad variety of students and their backgrounds that will make our PSM program at OSU a truly unique and meaningful experience for you.
Summer Activities
You can start looking for a major professor and forming your graduate committee prior to coming to OSU if you’re motivated. Please visit your PSM Graduate Program web pages under Curriculum and Degree Completion for information. The Internet is a great way to learn more about the research focus of faculty members and make initial inquiries about potential overlapping areas of interest. You will be able to finalize organization of your graduate committee during fall term.
Registration for classes can be done during the summer using the course requirements guidelines found in each PSM Programs’ web pages. In addition to science courses in your field of study, all PSM students should register for the professional series of courses, which are taught in sequence starting fall term with Accounting & Finance for Scientists, Communication & the Practice of Science, and the 507 seminar course.
Special Events
At the beginning of fall term (end of September), you’ll be invited to a Fall Gathering Event for all PSM students, and this will give you an opportunity to get to know your classmates and learn more about the program.
In late November-early December, we host an Industry Workshop and all PSM students are invited to the luncheon. This is a great way to network among a supportive group of potential internship providers and/or employers.
At the end of spring term, we organize an event just for 1st-year PSM students who will be moving in different directions for summer internships and industry mentors who participated in the spring term case studies class. This is a good way to end your first year of study!
